Barcelona 4-0 Sevilla: Messi Makes His Century

As Barca Breeze To Victory

Despite more heroics from los Rojiblancos' keeper, the Blaugrana came out on top at the Camp Nou with a fine performance...

Barcelona 4-0 Sevilla - Lineups/Stats
La Liga Fixtures/Results

Barcelona eased to a 4-0 victory at the Camp Nouagainst Sevilla in a dominant performance. A Julien Escude own goal opened the scoring before Pedro doubled the lead, but some excellent goalkeeping from Andres Palop prevented the score from becoming embarrassing. Lionel Messi completed the scoring with two goals in the final 10 minutes.

The hosts started typically comfortably on the ball and could have taken an early lead when Thierry Henry set up Zlatan Ibrahimovic following a superb ball by Andres Iniesta, but the Swede could only shoot feebly wide from five yards.

Messi had a shout for a penalty in the 10th minute when Lolo appeared to pull him back in the penalty area, but referee Delgado Ferreiro waved away the appeals. Moments later, another excellent ball set Henry through on goal, but Palop raced out of his penalty area and blocked the shot well.

The home side were dominating proceedings, knocking the ball around with ease on the slick surface, but were being frustrated by a solid Sevilla backline. In the 20th minute, Iniesta went on a mazy run that was almost Messi-esque before teeing up Dani Alves, but the Brazilian could only find the side netting.

Sevilla had barely been able to get out of their own half in the first 30 minutes and could easily have gone behind but Carles Puyol's header landed on top of the net from a Xavi corner. Just after the half hour mark, Messi hit a 20-yard shot that was deflected wide, and this time Puyol's header was blocked by Palop.

With 10 minutes until half time, the veteran keeper pulled off an excellent save from another deflected shot by Messi to tip it over the crossbar. Marc Valiente was struggling to deal with the Argentine's danger and was booked for a foul that would have been more at home on a rugby pitch.

As the rain continued to pour in the Camp Nou, Puyol slipped to allow Arouna Kone to have a sight on goal but his strike went out for a corner, Sevilla's first of the game. It was the 38th minute.

Nonetheless, the visitors were starting to come forward a little more as the half time whistle approached. Some good play by Kone and Jose Carlos set Jesus Navas through, but the angle was too tight to shoot and his touch was too strong as he attempted to round Victor Valdes. Despite some late Barcelona pressure, the half ended goalless.

Los Nervionenses made a double change at the break, with Diego Capel and Aldo Duscher replacing Jose Carlos and Valiente. Rafa Marquez also came on for the hosts after Puyol couldn't shake off an injury.

Kone nearly stunned the Camp Nou just after half time when he beat Marquez and Pique, but Valdes closed the angle and the ball was hooked clear of danger.

In the 49th minute, the hosts took the lead in fortunate circumstances. Marquez received the ball on the right wing and after Pique had got the slightest touch on the low cross,Julien Escude could only stab the ball into his own net.

It was nearly 2-0 two minutes later. Messi received the ball 35 yards from goal after a superb run by Dani Alves, but after running into the area Palop saved the Argentine's shot with his boot. Shortly after, Ibrahimovic played the ball back to Henry in the penalty area but the Sevilla keeper was able to make yet another save.

Ibrahimovic thought he had scored in the 54th minute, but he was correctly flagged offside after heading in from a matter of feet.

Barcelona were rampant, and the Camp Nou faithful were on the edge of their seats as the home side launched attack after attack. Manolo Jimenez took a gamble by taking off Abdoulay Konko for Adriano in an attempt to reverse the tide, but Henry continued to pose a threat on the left flank and tested Palop's reflexes in the 62nd minute.

In the 67th minute there was mayhem in the Sevilla penalty area. Messi was free in the box and brought another save from the outstanding Palop, before the next shot was blocked and Ibrahimovic's shot was cleared off the line. Substitute Pedro then had a chance after Abidal's cut-back found him 10 yards out, but it was straight at Palop.

The Sevilla keeper was finally beaten for a second time with 20 minutes to go. The pass from Xavi was perfect as Marius Stankevicius tried to step up for offside, but Pedro raced clear and chipped over the advancing Palop.

Sevilla looked a beaten side, and were content to sit back and let Barcelona knock the ball around between themselves to the rhythm of the olé's coming from the crowd.

As the game ticked into its final 10 minutes, the fans were growing impatient as they waited for the third goal, which arrived in the 85th minute. Messi picked up the ball from another Dani Alves cross and could barely miss from 10 yards out to score his 100th goal for the club.

The frustrations of los Nervionenses' stopper were plain to see as the hosts continued to caress the ball around the pitch. Kone had a shot blocked in the 90th minute, but the threat from the visitors had been negligable throughout.

The game was wrapped up in the 91st minute when Abidal played Messi through, and the world's best player slid the ball effortlessly past Palop. It was a sublime performance from the Spanish, European and world champions as they brushed the Champions League contenders aside.

Report: Manchester United Line Up Barcelona

Boss Pep Guardiola To Succeed Sir Alex Ferguson

News of the World claims that Pep Guardiola, the Barcelona coach, could take over from Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United within the next two years.

The Catalan hero made a splash last season in his maiden term as a first-team boss, leading Barca to glory in La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Champions League.

It was against the Red Devils in Rome that the Blaugrana clinched their historic treble, and it is said that Ferguson wants to draft in Guardiola as his right-hand man and eventual successor.

The 38-year-old's agent, Jose Maria Orobigt, is quoted as saying: "A club has contacted me but there have been no discussions over money or the sporting project. Anything like that is up to Pep."

Guardiola's contract at the Camp Nou expires in six months' time.

Barcelona Defender Gerard Pique Wants To Lift

Champions League Trophy At Bernabeu

The Barcelona man says he would hardly be able to contain himself...

While many of Barcelona's players are licking their wounds following last night's Copa del Rey defeat to Sevilla, defender Gerard Pique still has his sights set on one major objective.

The final of this year’s UEFA Champions League will be played at the Santiago Bernabeu, and Pique has expressed his 'excitement' at the prospect of lifting the coveted trophy in Real Madrid's home stadium.

If we won over at Real Madrid’s Bernabeu, it would be fantastic, a marvellous feeling, a superorgasmo," he toldInterviu.

The former Manchester United man also admitted that is “very happy” at the club and that he never wants to leave Barcelona again, insisting that he will see out the remainder of his career in Catalonia.

"My desire is not to go anywhere else,” he said, “I want to retire at the Camp Nou."

Finally, Pique heaped more praise on coach Pep Guardiola, “He is the ideal coach for the club. Guardiola knows how to convey his ideas to the players and will go with them to the end of the earth.”

Barcelona's Carles Puyol: We Will Strive For La

Liga And The Champions League

The Barca captain has vouched for his coach and team after their Copa del Rey exit and assured that the Blaugrana will fight even harder for La Liga and the Champions League...

In an attempt to take the positives away from being dumped out of the Copa del Rey by Sevilla yesterday, Barcelona defender Carles Puyol has assured fans that his team will focus on taking the Liga and Champions League titles this season.

"None of us likes having been eliminated from a competition and it is no consolation to me that we have fallen to a team as good as Sevilla," declared the captain in comments reported by Sport.

Puyol also contradicted his coach Pep Guardiola, who declared yesterday that he felt he had failed the team, stating instead that "Guardiola has not failed us".

"He prepared us very well for the match and it was by very little that we fell out of the compeitition. I have always said that it is the players who win or lose matches. We are very proud of Guardiola."

"The important thing is to learn from this situation and the rest that comes with being out of the Copa, after two demanding seasons with many matches and few days off, will prepare us well to play even better for La Liga and the Champions League".

Barcelona Star Yaya Toure Baffled Why Arsenal

Never Signed Him

Midfielder wants to play in England one day...

Barcelona midfielder Yaya Toure has revealed that he came very close to joining Arsenal instead of Olympiakosin 2005.

The 26-year-old has since become one of Europe's finest defensive midfielders and continues to attract attentions from the Premier League too, with a clutch of England's top clubs said to be tracking him.

Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea as well as the Gunners were said to be interested in securing his services in the summer as he entered contract talks at the Camp Nou.

That interest has reportedly continued into this transfer window, and Toure admits that he would like to play in England's top flight one day.

"I was disappointed and never understood why [Arsenal manager Arsene] Wenger did not want to close the deal," he told Spanish newspaper Marca, referring to the potential deal in 2005.

"But one day I would like to play in the Premier League."

Wolfsburg Keen On Barcelona Defender Gabriel

Milito - Report

The Argentinian centre-back could be on his way to the Bundesliga...

Highly rated defender Gabriel Milito could be set to leave European champions Barcelona as German outfit Wolfsburg show an interest in the centre-back, according to Wolfsburger Allgemeine Zeitung.

The Wolfe have been struggling to find their best form before the winter break and have looked shaky at the back on more than one occasion. Therefore, head coach Armin Veh is eager to add to his defensive ranks.

Wolfsburg were previously linked with defenders such as Marek Jankulovski, Kakha Kaladze, Benedikt Hoewedes and Douglas, but they have now reportedly made Milito their prime transfer target.

The Argentine defender has only recently returned to full match fitness after a lengthy spell on the sidelines due to injury. However, Milito isn't likely to get a lot of first team action this season and could be farmed out on loan as a result.

The former Real Zaragoza star faces stiff competition from Gerard Pique, Carles Puyol, Rafael Marquez and Dmytro Chygrynsky for a spot in the starting XI at theCamp Nou.

Barcelona & Real Madrid Weigh Up £70m Bid For Manchester United Star Wayne Rooney - Report

The former Everton man is wanted by Spain's top duo...

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney could soon be the subject of bids from Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona, according to a report from The Sun.

Financial figures released yesterday showed that United would have made a loss last year without the £80 million that they received from Real for the sale of Cristiano Ronaldo.

As speculation grows that there is further financial woe ahead at Old Trafford, The Sun claims that selling Rooney might well be the only way for the Red Devils to ease the impending problems.

The two Spanish clubs are reported as already considering bids of around £70m for the 24-year-old England regular.

Barcelona Star Andres Iniesta: We Play To Win Titles, Not To Silence Our Critics

Iniesta insists that the Catalan outfit don’t let media criticism bother them…

Following Barcelona’s emphatic 5-0 win over Tenerife last night, midfielder Andres Iniesta has insisted his team’s motivation is found in winning titles, not hushing the critics.

“We continue thinking about improving for people to be proud of us. We did not play to shut mouths. We can not stop and think about that," he said, according to Marca.

Barca came into last night’s game off the back of two disappointing results, a draw at home to Villarreal and a home loss to Sevilla in the Copa del Rey. The press were sharpening their knives following a disappointing opening 30 minutes in which they were lucky not to have gone behind.

“We know that at the start of the game things did not go quite right. Maybe we need to change that way of playing the game, we tightened up so much, but we have solutions for it," he said.

The Spanish international also offered some words of encouragement to young team-mate Bojan Krkic, whose performance last night has earned some well deserved plaudits.

“In Tenerife he had a very complete game, at his age and with the talent he has, he must be calm and do the things he knows.”
